Open-ended Resitivity lab

Studies show that open-ended labs provide more and better opportunities for students to learn research skills than do traditional, content-focused labs. We introduced an open-ended activity to the electricity and magnetism lab for pre-health majors. The prompt simply asks students to investigate the resistivity of Play-Doh and submit a report on the results. The activity is engaging and provides ample opportunities to teach students about experimental design and analysis. I will discuss the various choices that students made in carrying out the experiment and how we will apply this to the development of a future lab class for physics majors.
