Optimizing the Magnetic Domains of 8 and 31 Angstrom Co/Pt Thin-Films
I am doing research under Dr. Karine Chesnel in the physics department. My research studies the magnetic domains morphologies of Co/Pt multilayer thin-films. The thickness of each cobalt layer varies from 8 – 60 Angstroms and the thickness of the platinum layer is fixed to be 7 Angstroms. This set of layers repeats 50 times.
We used a Vibrating Sample Magnetometer (VSM) to apply a strong magnetic field ranging from 0 Tesla to 9 Tesla, the final magnitude of the field applied, before returning it to a net-zero magnetization. We then used a Magnetic Force Microscope (MFM) to map the magnetic domains before applying the next field value. I am looking for the relationship between the magnitude of a previously applied magnetic field and the density of the magnetic domains in various types of series in the 8 Angstrom and 31 Angstrom thin-films.
I will also show the measurements of the magnetization loops in-plane and out-of-plane which will be used for the evaluation of the magnetic anisotropy constant as a function of cobalt thickness.
