The Mathematics of Origami Mechanisms to be Deployed for Spinal Implants

There is still great room for improvements in implants for spinal fusion.  The surgeries that are normally performed are invasive to the body and are not ideal for the mechanics of the body.  In this research, we analyzed the feasibility of using a deployable origami structure as a spinal implant.  We investigated a variety of materials and final geometric shapes that would fit this design problem.  In order to arrive at a solution, we decided to pursue a generalized approach for deployable structures designed for any desired circumstance and then implement our findings in order to create possible solutions for the spinal implant problem.  This study will provide valuable insight to medical professionals, especially since the spinal fusion surgery affects 250 million people per year.
