A two-dimensional impact trajectory analyzer based on printed circuit board image-charge detectors
Charge detection mass spectrometry (CDMS) is emerging as an important method for analyzing the mass and charge distributions of heterogeneous samples. CDMS measures the mass-to-charge ratio (m/z) and charge of each individual particle with virtually no upper mass limit. We previously reported an image-charge detector with detection elements patterned onto printed circuit boards (PCBs). An advantage to the PCB charge detector is that sensing patterns can be easily changed by modifying the PCB design to suit specific analytical objectives. Here we developed a two-stage PCB image-charge detector which can not only analyze one-dimensional information (time, velocity, and charge) as traditional charge detectors, but also record two-dimensional information (trajectories) simultaneously. Electrospray-charged bacterial spores and polystyrene beads are tested in rebound experiments.
