Optimizing transducers for time reversal used in crack detection
Time reversal is an energy-focusing technique. It is applied in many different ways, but here it is applied to enable crack detection. It is useful because it is a non-destructive form of evaluation. Focusing is created at several inspection locations in order to locate cracks. A large amplitude focusing improves the ability to detect nonlinear harmonic frequencies that are indicative of the vibration signature of a crack. The goal of this research is to determine the best size of piezo-electric transducer to perform time reversal evaluation with and to design the optimal chaotic cavity to which the transducers are bonded to. Optimization of the transducer and chaotic cavity will make the largest focusing amplitude at the crack and therefore improve the ability to detect it.
