Optical Properties of Rhodamine B as a Temperature Sensor


Rhodamine B is a pink photoluminescent dye that is generally used to track the location of substances that cannot be easily observed. Since it is non-invasive and the lifetime of its photoluminescence (PL) varies according to the temperature of its environment, it has potential applications as a localized temperature sensor in biological tissue. In order to calibrate such a sensor, the relationship between temperature and lifetime has been studied by exciting samples with a laser at temperatures ranging from 15 K to 300 K and measuring the resulting PL with time-correlated single photon counting. After extensive study, the PL lifetime data results do not appear to follow a consistent trend with temperature and may depend on more factors, which suggests that Rhodamine B’s use as a temperature sensor is not practical.
