Detecting and Preconcentrating Pertechnetate in Aqueous Environments


Pertechnetate is an aqueous, ionic pollutant released by nuclear sources ranging from power plants to medical waste.  Detecting pertechnetate is essential to verifying the safety of water sources downstream of said pollutant sources.  Using perrhenate as a chemical analogue, experimentation has revealed a detection and quantification method using a lab-made chromatography column, ion chromatography, and 50 mM NaOH eluent.  Through preconcentration, this method can quantify perrhenate at concentrations as low as 10 ppm.  Preconcentration studies and a linear correlation between peak integration and concentration further validate this detection method.
