Terahertz Imaging of Fibrotic Tissue


Diagnosis of certain diseases, such as Idiopathic Pulmonary Fibrosis (IPF) is difficult due to subjective scoring by pathologists. Terahertz (THz) spectroscopy is a valuable method for identifying material composition, as vibrational states of many biomolecules fall in the THz region and produce unique spectral signatures. As such, THz spectroscopy can be used as a bioimaging tool to increase diagnostic objectivity. We plan to use THz imaging to spatially map IPF biomarkers in mouse tissue samples. Absorption maps show the ability to spectroscopically image and correlate data to comparable optical images commonly used in diagnosis. We aim to identify unique spectral elements of IPF biomarkers in order to map their presence and localization in a sample. We expect our technique to serve as an objective and accurate diagnostic tool for IPF without the need for subjective tissue scoring.
