Basic 3D Lung Model for Lung Diseases

In the US alone, there are more than 3 million chronic lung disease-related cases every year. However, finding probable causes for lung diseases is impeded by the lack models that can accurately represent the conditions of the lung. In view of this, we then created a basic 3D model mimicking the alveolar sac and were able to recreate the structure with fidelity. We have seen the interstitial interaction between muscles and blood vessel while keeping the epithelium secluded. This work hopes to expand the development of new methods for developing new treatments at high-throughput, like microplates with low batch variability. This will also be a more affordable and effective model, while bridging the discrepancy between cell cultures and in vivo animal models.
