Vaccination Carbohydrate Synthesis

The purpose of our research is to synthesize carbohydrate antigens associated with bacterium that can then be used to create vaccines to prevent infections and diseases. We each synthesized carbohydrates associated with specific bacterium: D-Fucose for Staphylococcus aureus and D-Rhamnose for Burkholderia, etc. The synthesis of this carbohydrate D-Fucose is achieved by modifying D-Galactose, while the synthesis of D-Rhamnose is achieved by modifying D-Mannose using the same method for both carbohydrates. We hypothesize that by using these modified monomeric carbohydrates and then attaching them to a virus-like-particles, we can create vaccines that will effectively reduce infections and prevent diseases.
