Helical Resonator for a Dual-Species Hybrid Magneto Optical Ion Trap


Ion collisions in a strongly coupled ultracold neutral plasma are useful for simulating collisions and properties found in high energy dense plasmas. Magneto optical traps and ion traps provide effective methods for creating and trapping ultra cold neutral plasmas for long timescale measurements. Helical resonators improve the efficiency of ion traps by amplifying input voltages high enough for trapping. We report on the design and construction of a 5Mhz helical resonator for our ion trap. The resonator we built has a Q-factor of 151, providing sufficient amplification for us to trap Ca atoms within our trap.
