Geometric Transformations: Alignment of Teachers’ Mathematical Goals to Research-Based Learning Trajectories
The Common Core State Standards For Mathematics modified the grade-level at which students learn rigid transformations, causing transformations to be a new and unfamiliar unit for middle school teachers. Crites, Dougherty, Slovin, and Karp (2018) outline how teachers can aid students in building understanding and making connections between rigid transformations and congruence. In this presentation I will report on how teachers’ mathematical goals were aligned with the recommendations of Crites et al (2018). These results have implications for preservice and in-service teachers to assist them in identifying mathematical goals which are aligned with the standards and based on appropriate learning trajectories.
