Magnetic domain patterns of Cobalt/Platinum thin films
I will present a study of the magnetic domain patterns in Cobalt (Co)/Platinum(Pt) thin films. Recently we’ve been trying to image the magnetic domains via Magnetic Force Microscopy (MFM) with a magnetic field applied in-situ. The goal of this experiment is to visualize the evolution of the domains throughout the magnetization process. In particular, we observe that stripe-like domains split into shorter stripes and then bubbles and then disappear completely as the thin film becomes magnetized perpendicularly. The size of the MFM images for this study are two by two microns. The samples we’ve been working with have 7 Angstroms of Pt and about 3 nanometers of Co with a varying number of repeats from 5 to 20. So far we’ve imaged the samples with 20, 16, and 12 repeats of these layers, but with varying degrees of success. We hope to improve upon our experimental setup in order to get better images and increase the range of field values that we can get images for.
