Modifications of Basic Zippered Tube Origami Patterns in the Design of Deployable Mechanisms

Abstract

Zippered tubes have various applications in civil engineering, biomedical fields, and in robotics due to their versatility. We present a novel method for understanding how zippered tubes are constructed. We define axioms and conditions for zippered tube construction and present a mathematical model describing the motion of a zippered tube. Additionally, we describe how a zippered tube pattern can be tapered as well as how the different tube types can be coupled together to form different shapes.
