Title

Natural Language Processing on Therapist Notes

Abstract

Over the past decade, suicide has become more prevalent and pervasive especially among college students. Suicide is the second-leading cause for death among college students and about 12% of college students report the occurrence of suicidal ideation during their time in school. To help understand the factors that play into suicidal ideation, we use data from the BYU counseling center including therapist notes and questionnaires. We utilize natural language processing techniques on the therapist notes to extract information related to suicidal ideation and to label students according to a suicidal ideation risk scale.
