Title

Imaging Landau Closure Domains

Abstract

My research under Dr. Karine Chesnel is in collaboration with Dr Sandberg and Los Alamos National Labs. Microstructures were etched into samples with layers of varying thicknesses composed primarily of nickel (Ni) and chromium (Cr) deposited onto a silicon substrate with a capping layer of gold for material preservation.  The composition of these samples suggested they may exhibit magnetic vortex structures with an in-plane magnetization.  Our goal is to image these magnetic stuctures and understand their relation to the material composition and shape. Through my research I have been able to indirectly see the in-plane magnetic field component by using a Magnetic Force Microscope and confirming the existence of Landau closure domains on two independent samples. I will be showing various images taken.
