Title

Are Photonics the Future of Quantum Computing?

Abstract

Quantum computers leverage the quantum mechanical properties of small particles to perform complex operations As the research field has grown, multiple types of quantum computers have been proposed and some have working prototypes. One of the main hurdles to overcome in a quantum computer is error due to unwanted interactions with the natural environment. The lack of photon-photon interaction opens up the possibility for a more robust quantum computer. In this talk, I discuss the parts and functionality of a quantum computer. I then review advantages and disadvantages, as well as the overall feasibility of building and using a photonic quantum computer, and review current progress in the field.
