Transformational Approach to Similarity
Common Core State Standards require students to understand similarity and congruence in terms of geometric transformations. The NCTM has also published standards emphasizing the use of transformations to better understand similarity. Traditionally (prior to CCSS) state standards used a non-transformational approach defining similarity in terms of corresponding sides and proportions. Most teachers and textbooks are still teaching the traditional approach regardless of the standards. There is a need for professional development and resources to aide teachers in making the transition to teaching similarity using rotations, reflections, translations, and dilations. My thesis project is to create a professional develop that challenges teachers’ knowledge of similarity, motivates them to think about it in different ways and provides resources to encourage change in curriculum.
