Kinetic Energy Dependence on CRAFTI Measurements: Reaching the Sweet Spot
Solving scientific problems requires a lot of tools. One of them is determining cross section. Determining a molecule’s cross section can elucidates information about its shape, which is applicable to protein studies and other systems. One method is by measuring collisional cross sections. Cross-sectional areas by Fourier transform ion cyclotron resonance (CRAFTI) is a technique whereby these measurements can be performed in an instrument which is not specifically built for determining cross sections. CRAFTI measurements depend on single collision dissociations. The target molecule must be excited to a certain kinetic energy for these single collisions to occur. While we can easily excite molecules to a high enough kinetic energy, we do not currently know what minimum kinetic energy is needed to produce a single collision dissociation and thus an accurate CRAFTI measurement. In our work, we excite the target molecules through a wide range of kinetic energies and collide them with the background gas. We can then determine the strength of the bonding interactions broken and the kinetic energy required for a single collision dissociation.
