Interpolation and Overlay of Topography Files for Tsunami Modeling

Abstract

In order to improve our model of a tsunami in Indonesia, we combined data from a high resolution topography file with bathymetry from a low resolution file. To do this, we developed a method to (i) slice accurate land data from relevant regions of a higher resolution file, (ii) interpolate over the corresponding regions of a low resolution file to approximate the sea floor, and (iii) replace missing values in the high resolution file with the approximations from the interpolated data. This made it possible generate a better approximation of the terrain near locations where our tsunami of interest was observed.
