Acetate and Lactate Produced by C. bescii Treatment of Biomass

Abstract

Common methods for pretreatment of organic waste to increase biomethane production by anaerobic digestion are too costly. Hence there is a need to develop new pretreatment methods to make anaerobic digestion a practical source of renewable energy. Treatment of biomass with Caldicellulosiruptor bescii (CB) can be used to enhance the digestibility of biomass. C. bescii pretreatment has been shown to increase biogas output, primarily due to breakdown of cellulose to acetate and lactate. In this study, analyses by High Pressure Liquid Chromatography (HPLC) is used to determine acetate and lactate as a function of time during pretreatment of cow manure with C. bescii.
