Men\'s Soccer Statistical Research
The BYU Men’s Soccer Team has a 31-game winning streak in club play. Although their play has been exceptional, they continue to work on increasing their offensive efficiency. For this project, we analyzed every shot and play leading to a shot to determine indicators that influenced performance. They scored 46 goals on 193 shots for an extremely high 23.8% shot efficiency. We found that certain areas of the field yielded a higher rate of shots being on target, and that certain types of play and location of play starts were more effective relative to scoring efficiency. While we believe improved software with real-time location of plays could improve analysis opportunities, manual annotation of video is still an important analysis tool.
