Misconceptions with Limits
Limits are the basis of calculus and a sound understanding of limits predicts success later in a student’s math career. Students at BYU are not formally introduced to limits until they take Calculus (Math 112); however, the concept of limits is implicitly taught in the Pathways to College Algebra course (Math 110). Researchers have found that students tend to have many different misconceptions related to their understanding of limits. I will analyze calculus students misconceptions who took one of the two different College Algebra courses offered at BYU. I will specifically investigate what misconceptions these students displayed at the beginning of the limit unit in Calculus and how, if at all, those conceptions change by the end of the unit. The results will be used to inform instructors on concepts that may be contributing to students misconceptions.
