Title

Building League-to-League Performance Curves for Professional Basketball Players

Abstract

This study aims to build performance curves for a number of professional basketball players that have played in a variety of leagues.  We will focus our study on five players who played in the “Liga Nacional de Basquetbol” (Argentina) then subsequently played in the more difficult “Liga ACB” (Spain).  We are measuring how the Efficient Offensive Production per 40 Min (a proprietary measure of offensive production) changes over time for each player.  We use P-splines, along with Markov chain Monte Carlo methods, to estimate the parameters needed to model Efficient Offensive Production per 40 Min for each player.  We hope to use this methodology to predict the offensive production of future Argentina-to-Spain players, and more generally, to predict the offensive production of future players transferring from league to league.
