Sequestering Perrhenate using Zinc Cyclen Resorcinarene Macrocycles

Abstract

Nuclear power generation, nuclear weapons, and many medical isotopes release Pertechnetate, a radioactive pollutant that dissolves readily in water.  Zinc Cyclen Resorcinarene (ZCR) is a macrocycle that can be adsorbed onto resin in an ion chromatography column and used to separate perrhenate, an analog for pertechnetate, from common aqueous anions.  Prior research illustrates that anion retention occurs through anions binding with the four zinc cyclen ligands attached to the macrocycle.  We have already performed a separation, at 100 ppm perrhenate, from a matrix of common anions including nitrate, chloride, phosphate, and even perchlorate.  Our current research is centered on discovering a way to preconcentrate perrhenate on the column so that separations of even smaller concentrations can be performed.
