Title

Phosphorus flux in Utah Lake

Abstract

Utah Lake has experienced harmful algae blooms driven by phosphorous (P) contributions from multiple sources, including wastewater treatment plants. Our goal is to measure the flux of P in the sediment to see if most of the P is trapped or released for biological use in water which can lead to harmful blooms. Previous studies have determined that some P is bound in the sediment with Fe and Ca but can become available for resuspension under changing redox conditions. We will use a variety of sampling methods to determine flux rates in situ and mechanisms of release tested in the lab to determine the amount of P that will be bioavailable. This can influence the decision to filter P out of the water coming from the treatment plants if not enough of the P is being captured in the sediments.
