Title

Measurement of Blood Insulin Levels with Surface-Enhanced Raman Spectroscopy

Abstract

Type II diabetes or insulin resistant diabetes is becoming more and more prevalent.  It is currently diagnosed through the detection of elevated levels of blood glucose.  However, a diagnosis could be made much earlier if the diagnosis were based on blood insulin levels.  This is rarely done as measuring blood insulin is costly.

Raman spectroscopy is useful in identifying and quantifying biological molecules due to water having a small signal.  In a former study, Shao et. al. used Raman spectroscopy to measure blood glucose levels in vivo in mice using hemoglobin as an internal standard. 

Our aim is to develop a method with Raman spectroscopy to measure blood insulin that will be cheaper and so make the test more common, which will lead to earlier diagnosis and better outcomes for patients.
