To what extent are local hidden varibles incompatible with quantum mechanics?

Abstract

Local hidden variables assume realism and locality in describing quantum phenomena. John Bell provided an inequality that all local hidden variable theories must satisfy. Some entangled quantum states have been experimentally shown to violate Bell's inequality, thereby disproving the validity of local hidden variable theories. I outline the use of Bell's inequality as a proof against local hidden variable theories, and explore how to find the degree of entanglement necessary to violate the inequality.
