Near Field Acoustic Holography of Musical Instruments
An accurate description of the sound fields of musical instruments is central to both understanding the mechanics of the instrument and to recreating its unique radiation patterns. We are evaluating the effectiveness and reliability of several different sampling schemes using spherical microphone arrays, and then using the data gathered to describe the sound fields by computing the coefficients of a spherical harmonic series. Using this information, we can spatially recreate and model the radiation patterns and search for defining characteristics of each instrument.
