Metallization of DNA Origami Templates Using Nanoparticles and Nanorods

Abstract

DNA origami is a promising bottom-up nanofabrication technique that makes use of scaffold DNA and staple strands for creating desired structures. The self-assembled DNA templates facilitate the fabrication of nanometallic structures, leading to potential nanocircuits. However, metallization of DNA templates to create continuous nanowires is challenging. We have created different structures on tile DNA templates (70 nm x 90 nm) by site-specific metallization. DNA functionalized gold nanorods are hybridized to selective sites on the tiles, and electroless plating fills the gaps between nanorods through anisotropic growth. Since tellurium is a semiconductor, we are currently working on depositing tellurium nanorods on DNA nanostructures and connecting them to Au nanorods. Our goal is not only to metallize DNA templates but also to characterize their electrical properties.
