Title

Verifying Magnetic Particle Modification for Rapid Bacterial Diagnosis

Abstract

Sepsis is a life-threatening response to an infection of the blood, with a high mortality rate if not treated quickly. Diagnosing the underlying cause of the infection takes time, complicating the treatment process. Our research is focused on using modified magnetic particles to separate low concentrations of bacteria from blood in order to quickly identify the infecting pathogen. My focus has been on modifying the surface of magnetic particles to have high affinity for bacteria and on analyzing the success of the modification. This is an important first step toward making rapid bacteria capture from blood possible.
