Title

Mathematical Identity of Mathematics Education Majors

Abstract

The narratives and stories that students construct about their own mathematical ability is something that is important for teachers to consider. Students’ mathematical identities they construct have a huge impact on their learning, understanding, and participating in mathematics. Much research has been done in regards to the teaching practices of secondary mathematics teachers and the effects they have on student learning in the classroom. Where little research is done is looking at the way that pre-service secondary teachers view their own mathematical abilities. My thesis will look at the mathematical experiences of mathematics education majors in their upper level mathematics courses and how that has impacted how they have created their own mathematical identities and views of their ability to do mathematics.
