Title

Do You Hear What I Hear? Behavioral Modeling of Crowd Acoustics

Abstract

Protests, riots, lynchings, rallies—data shows that people in groups can behave quite differently than they would on their own. Understanding this distinction can help enable freedom of assembly—an important right in any functional democracy--while managing and protecting the safety of each member of the group and those they affect. This project aims to study crowds as entities distinct from the collection of their constituent individuals and characterize crowd state and behavior. In particular, we use acoustic data from various crowd assemblies to begin the process of understanding what really characterizes a crowd as a system.
