Math Learning Software for Speakers of Many Languages
Mathematics is a subject area well-suited to computer-based teaching. As a result, many math-teaching software packages exist. However, they rely heavily on text-based instructions in English, or, in a few cases, Spanish. There is little accommodation made for English speakers who can not read or have difficulty reading, or for non-English speakers. I propose to develop math software that accommodates a wider range of learners by allowing instruction via text, audio instruction, and visual language instruction, such as ASL. The learning platform will be associated with a translation platform that enables speakers of other languages, including other visual languages, to easily volunteer small segments of time to translate individual snippets of instruction.
