Development of immunoaffinity extraction monoliths for preterm birth biomarkers in 3D printed microfluidic devices.

Abstract

Preterm birth (PTB) is the most common complication in pregnancy with a high incidence rate of 1 out of 9 births in the United States. There is no clinical assessment readily available to determine the risk of a PTB prior to contractions. We are creating a potentially low cost and rapid diagnostic for PTB biomarkers in 3D printed microfluidic devices. We have developed affinity monoliths and extracted two PTB biomarkers, ferritin and lactoferrin, on monoliths in 3D printed microfluidic devices. We are also determining conditions for extracting corticotropin releasing factor. Our development of immunoaffinity monoliths for PTB biomarkers in 3D printed microfluidic devices represents a key step toward creating a rapid diagnostic test.
