Alzheimer Disease Lipid Biomarkers Gender Cases VS Controls

Abstract

Alzheimer’s Disease (AD) is a neurodegenerative disease that affects memory and cognition. It is the sixth leading cause of death in the United States and is a leading cause of morbidity. AD is characterized by intracellular fibers of hyperphosphorylated tau protein and extracellular amyloid-beta plaques; these features can only be verified through autopsies and are not entirely conclusive about AD. The cause of AD is not completely understood, and it is difficult to diagnose—especially in its initial stages. This complicates AD diagnosis for drug studies because known changes in cell biology are not strongly associated with changes in serum biomarkers. There seem to be apparent differences in some AD features between men and women. Using direct infusion mass spectrometry to verify potential biomarkers, we compared different stages of AD to controls with no apparent disease in men and women separately. We found promising biomarkers that show potential for early AD detection, which could prove crucial to prevent significant neurodegeneration.
